The Mauritian Party of Xavier Duval (in French, Parti Mauricien Xavier Duval, PMXD) was founded in 1998. Member of the Social Alliance / Alliance Sociale led by the Mauritius Labour Party (MLP), the PMXD won two seats in the Parliament after the 2005 general election. Xavier Duval was appointed Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism.
Xavier Duval is the son of Sir Gaëtan Duval (1930-1996), leader of the Mauritian Social Democrat Party (in French, Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate, PMSD), founded in 1953 and once partisan of the integration of Mauritius to the United Kingdom. Gaëtan Duval’s succession was not easy and the party split into the PMSD, led by Maurice Allet and keeping the original party’s emblem, the rooster, and the PMXD, founded by Xavier Duval and using the horse as its emblem. Attempts to reconciliate the two factions have failed since then and the PMSD is still in the opposition.
